So generally, on a daily basis as long as there is no rain, the boys and I head up to the top of the street to play and ride bikes. I usually hang with the other mommas while the kids are tearin' it up. This is nothing new...but today, we were the only ones out there and Gibson was riding around on his bike like normal and was about 10 feet from me, when he went down, and went down hard. I'm still not quite sure how it happened. I *think* his foot slipped or somehow got caught because he fell over sideways and landed on his face/side of his head. His head actually bounced. By the time I got him untwined from his bike, he was screaming. I have never heard him scream like that before. I asked him what hurt and he was screaming about his head. He was bleeding from the road rash and his mouth had some blood in it and his nose was running and it had some blood in it, so, I grabbed all our stuff, yelled at the 2 littler boys to head to the neighbor's house so that I didn't have to take them to the ER with me. I got Gibson's helmet off and him in the car and we headed out.
We got to the ER which is thankfully only about 10 minutes away and we went right back to a room. They checked him out and the doctor ordered a CT Scan to make sure that there was no bleeding in his head. He didn't feel that they would find any, but since he cracked his helmet (in 2 places! eeek) he wanted to be certain. So, we waited to do that.
You can see that Gibson wasn't feeling well in the picture below. He kept saying his head hurt. He also told me he was really tired so we were worried about concussion. Thankfully, there was no bleeding in his head and everything seemed to be ok. The doctor told me he probably had a very mild concussion and to watch him for the next 24 hours and wake him every 3-4 hours during the night. The paperwork we were sent home with said that he just had a head injury and not a concussion, so I'm not exactly sure if he had a mild concussion or not but, I'm not taking any chances and I am still going to watch him and wake him in the night.
